Stop and investigate if you notice these signs
- A burning or scorching smell
- The dryer shuts off from heat and later restarts
- The top or sides become much hotter than usual
- Clothes are extremely hot but still damp
- The exterior vent barely moves air
Safety first: if you see smoke, sparks or signs of fire, stop using the appliance and treat it as an emergency. Do not wait for a routine vent-cleaning appointment.
Restricted exhaust can trap heat
A dryer is designed to move warm, humid air outdoors. Lint buildup, crushed ducting, nests or a stuck exterior termination can reduce that flow.
Not every overheating problem is a vent problem
Thermostats, heating elements and other components can fail. A good diagnosis checks both the vent symptoms and whether the appliance itself needs repair.
