Signs the exterior vent may be blocked
- Weak or no airflow outside while the dryer runs
- Visible nesting material near the termination
- Scratching, chirping or movement around the vent hood
- A sudden change in drying performance during nesting season
Why simply covering the opening can backfire
Any guard or cap has to allow the dryer to exhaust properly. A dryer vent technician should use a termination solution appropriate for dryer exhaust rather than improvising a mesh cover.
The U.S. Fire Administration: appliance and electrical fire safety specifically notes that small birds, animals and other debris can obstruct dryer vent airflow.
